The Jungle (Symphony No. 4) was commissioned and premiered by the New York Philharmonic in 2016 and serves as Wynton Marsalis' depiction of New York as super highway. "New York City is the most fluid, pressure‐packed, and cosmopolitan metropolis the modern world has ever seen," says Pulitzer Prize‐winner Wynton Marsalis. "The speed, freedom, and intensity of our relationships to each other ‒ and to the city itself ‒ forces us onto a collective super highway unlike any other in our country." The work will be performed in its entirety for the first time in 2019 and this special performance will be one of only a handful of performances to occur around the world in 2019. Having worked together for the preview performance of Wynton Marsalis' Violin Concerto in D with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra in 2015, conductor and collaborator Cristian Mǎcelaru returns to Chautauqua to join jazz legend Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

The exploration of cultural and societal issues has yielded some of Wynton Marsalis' most impactful work: the 1986 Grammy Award-winning Black Codes, 2007's From the Plantation to the Penitentiary, and 1994's Blood on the Fields ‐ the first jazz composition ever to win a Pulitzer Prize. The Ever Fonky Lowdown continues to highlight this close connection between ambitious leadership and uncompromised creativity. Premiered in June of 2018 at Jazz at Lincoln Center, this work's next performance will be at Chautauqua Institution. The Ever Fonky Lowdown features the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, vocalists, dancers and narrator. Through this work and the Friday conversation to happen on the Institution's lecture platform, Marsalis will convey his hopes, concerns, and insights about contemporary culture and society through an historically informed lens.
